Lone Learner or Group Learner

As a child in school you are expected to participate, speak up, collaborate, make friends.

All good.

Effortless for some kids but not so effortless for others.

I attended a professional development workshop a year or so back. We were divided into groups with instructions for a group activity. While it took me time to process all the instructions and the new knowledge, some of my group mates were into it a good 10 minutes before me. I felt…slow. And, I could not participate.

I am an introvert by nature and when I have to cope with the social pressure, I cannot think and process information as fast and as clearly. I learn and process information better when I am learning by myself. Once I am sure, I am not lost and I can participate and collaborate.

How does your child work best? Is he/she a lone- learner or a group learner?
